New Drawing Started: Portrait of Alaleh

October 2, 2012

I finally have the new studio space cleaned up enough to start making some art again. This is a small (8 x 10″) pastel based on a photo session of mine from several years ago of a good friend, Alaleh.

The surface is casein gesso on canvas mounted to a wood panel that I toned with a light gray pigment. To roughen up the surface a bit I added a layer of Golden’s “Absorbent Gesso” product. You can see the texture in the first image. Instead of blending the pastel with a stump, I just went back over it with a harder pastel that was lighter in value. I’m using Derwent Pastel pencils for this step, “French Grey #70 H & B.” I’m also touching up areas with some soft pastel sticks and sharpening edges with a 5H graphite pencil.
