New Painting Started: The Bright Cafe

May 16, 2011

I decided to put the sketches aside for awhile and start up a new painting. The surface is shellac sized paper mounted to hardboard at 16 x 20 inches. Sorry that these first two images of the preliminary pencil lines are hard to see but they were laid down that way intentionally.

I snapped this scene on a very low resolution camera many years ago as I waited in line for the restroom. Can’t quite remember the name of the town it was in, but it was somewhere off the I-5 in Southern California. The name of the place wasn’t “The Bright Cafe” but that’s what I’m calling it anyway.

I’ve just got some of the undertone painted in at this point in a very diluted wash of colored India Ink (Dr. Ph Martin’s Bombay brand.) I used a cotton swab to cover most of the larger areas, and will finish up the rest of it in oil paint.
