Casein Painting: Lament

August 4, 2008

This painting comes from a small black and white newspaper clipping I saved a few years ago. I don’t know the name of original photographer, but I believe it was an API photo taken somewhere in Palestine. The image was very striking with the dark figure in the background and the expression on the man’s face.

The surface is a solid birch panel 7.5 x 9.5 inches covered with cotton muslin fabric, and primed with casein gesso. The paint is casein.

I began by scanning the clipping and printed it out to size. Placing the print and panel side by side, I then loosely drew it to canvas with a sanguine tone Conté crayon, which I then sprayed with fixative, and began painting.
